What Are Terpenes?
Not all cannabis smells or tastes the same, and it all boils down to terpenes. Simply terpenes determine the flavor and effect. The skunk smell is cannabis’s most notable fragrance, as we all know. But, ask any smoker, and they will tell you, there are subtle varying flavors as well. Different cannabis strains have subtle variations in scent and flavor. What are Terpenes?
Terpenes are natures way of protecting and spreading plants. On a microscopic level, terpenes are the sticky, translucent glands found on tiny little hairs called trichomes. These hairs cover the surface of buds, leaves, and stems. The hairs, or trichomes, produce terpenes.
Terpenes are the compounds that looks like dust on cannabis. That dust like substance adds color, pigmentation, and scent to the plant’s leaves and buds. Terpenes are a plant’s first line of defense and best form of spreading the seed.
Why Terpenes Matter?
Terpenes determine flavor, but that’s not all. Other than giving flowers their scent, cannabis terpenes produce therapeutic effects. Scientists believe terpenes enhance or alter the euphoria from THC, aka the entourage effect. Remember, broad-spectrum has no THC, but full-spectrum does. In a study done on epileptic patience in 2018, people who took a broad-spectrum CBD tincture had better relief from symptoms with less side effects than those who used a CBD isolate. It’s important to note, CBD isolates do not contain terpenes. Isolating CBD compounds excludes terpenes. Broad-spectrum and full-spectrum CBD products, however, do contain terpenes.
